Due to the growing multiculturalism in Europe, the need to challenge inequality, injustice, racism, stereotypes and prejudices in the classroom and in schools is becoming more and more important. In the project “Race and Ethnicity Based Education: Local Solutions (REBELS)”, the developments leading to a multicultural Europe will be identified, analysed and presented as learning materials for a web based e-learning environment. In this e-learning environment, student teachers and school teachers will learn to tackle diversity based on ethnicity but also based on social and behavioural differences. These problems will be presented as teaching materials in a case format added by video fragments on CD-rom, shot at the several schools in the participating countries. In such way, also local solutions will be addressed as equally worthwhile. To stimulate cross-cultural reflectivity, student mobility will be enhanced to witness multicultural practices in schools abroad. This leads to a discussion about multicultural competencies and its usefulness in different contexts.

The project REBELS was running for three years (2004-2007). Due to the privacy of the involved students and teachers, the e-learning environment is closed for the public. However, the outcome of the project i.e. publications like reports, papers, presentations and manuals (teaching materials and learning materials) can be found on the portal.
